I wanted to like this more but as an experiment it's very 50/50. The good parts are pretty good. The presentation is fantastic. It looks old. Even reading this over a digital format, you feel like you're reading old data. The adds in the book are humorous. The coloring is spot on. it's designed to look old and at the same time convey a story. It's a tight balancing act that they hit. The character of Atlas is more fleshed out now. He's a confidence powered city worker that makes as many declarative statements as possible. It's humorous. You even get a funny hypnosis based, "He's such a jerk. Why can't I quit thinking about him?" moment Also, they got a great bit involving the famed Superman movie giant spider stories, which for those who don't know almost every Superman movie made from the 90s onward involved him fighting some form of giant spider in the script or actual film. It's weird that despite all that good stuff the book feels flat. I think it's partially cause they had to rework some of it most likely. I got the feeling he's was more openly fighting Donald Trump before the character became a Ted Cruz / Chuck Schumer type. I mean good job not wearing your views on your sleeve too hard but it's clear it affected things. Also, the main issue I'm noticing with these comics so far is that they want to have DC type characters but play with Marvel type ideas. They have confidence issues. They lose a lot. They're not particularly good at their jobs. You know Marvel comics stuff. It causes a visual disconnect. It'd be like watching Alan Alda complain about how his life as a female dentist in Bolivia is really hard. It's humorous but doesn't have the affect that they want.
I like this series so far despite my reservations on some bits (politics are just the worst regardless of side). It's only 3 issues in. I wish there were more but the wait is real. It'll be interesting to see what this all looks like when it's completed. Despite 3 stars, I think it's worth the ride.
